Day Trip Wine Tours

Paris/Flint Hill Wine Tour
A little less than an hour to starting point.

This trip takes you through meadows, pastures and forests of the lush and beautiful rolling Virginia countryside, to four Virginia wineries.

Leave Washington DC on I-66 until Exit 28, Route 17 North. Route 17 North will take you directly to Paris, Virginia after around seven miles. In Paris, have an early lunch at the Ashby Inn [703-592-3900], one of the finest Bed and Breakfasts in the country. You may also pack a picnic as each winery had an area for picnics. From the Ashby Inn, head south on Route 17 for about a mile until turning Right on SR-688, Leeds Manor Road. Follow this scenic road for a few miles until you see Naked Mountain Vineyards [703-364-1609] on the Left. After a steep decent, the driveway passes a lovely shaded pond and picnic area, and opens up to the vineyards and winery. Naked Mountain is run by a friendly staff and is well known for its excellent chardonnay.

From Naked Mountain, turn left back onto SR-688 and follow south for 1.5 miles to Route 55. Turn Right on route 55 West and follow for approximately 1.5 miles until seeing SR-726, Africa Mountain Road on the left. Turn left on SR-726 and follow for around two miles until a Right turn on SR-638, Fiery Mountain Road. Be careful because you will pass a spur of SR-638 on the left about a mile before the right hand turn. Follow SR-638 for a few hundred yards until you see Linden Vineyards on the left. Linden Vineyards [703-364-1997] offers a great selection of wines and a great view off of the deck of the Winery. Linden also has "pick-your-own" orchards and blueberry patches, and a wonderful area for picnics.

After leaving Linden Vineyards, turn Right onto SR-638, and then turn right back onto SR-726. Follow SR-726 for around three miles to a Right turn onto SR-635, Hume Road. Follow SR-635 for a little over a mile to Oasis Vineyards on the left. Oasis Vineyards [703-635-7627] has the largest selection of wines of the four, but also seemed the most commercial. Oasis is also the only Vineyard that charged to taste wines, though the charge was only one dollar. We saw no picnic area.

From Oasis Winery, turn left onto SR-635 and follow for about two miles to Route 522. Turn left onto Route 522 and follow south to the historic town of Flint Hill, about 5 miles. Look carefully for a left turn onto SR-647, Cresthill road just as you enter Flint Hill. SR-647 is next to a small restaurant and easy to miss so if you enter the main part of the town you've gone too far. Follow SR-647 for about four to five miles to Farfelu Vineyards on the Right. In my opinion, Farfelu vineyard is the gem of the four. While easily the smallest, the beautiful long and winding driveway led to an aged long wooden barn and stables that had been converted to the Winery. The proprietor immediately poured us samples of his cool and refreshing chardonnay and gave a complete tour of the winery, showing the grape crusher, fermentation tanks and barrel storage. While Farfelu Vineyards has no smoked salmon or trout mousse, it is the most genuine, complete with low post and beam ceilings and slate floors.

Leaving Farfelu Vineyards, turn right back onto SR-647 and follow for around ten miles back to I-66 (barely a mile away from where you left I-66 in the morning!).
